NEW YORK — Roger Federer reached the fourth round at a 30th consecutive a Grand Slam tournament by beating 27th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 on a blustery Saturday at the U.S. Open.

The third-seeded Federer improved his career record at Flushing Meadows to 59-6, including five championships.

He faltered only briefly at the end of the second set, getting broken in the last game when Cilic hit a big forehand that Federer couldn’t put back over the net.

With Cilic facing a break point while serving at 4-all in the third set, he was warned by the chair umpire for a time violation. Cilic promptly double-faulted, giving Federer a 5-4 lead.
