Hewlett-Packard has launched Moonshot project, an effort that could make the low-power ARM servers. HP obvious risk is that this might interfere with Intel, a key partner in its efforts to Itanium.
Moonshot project consists of a laboratory, a server development environment and ecosystems. If successful, HP helps customers to kick the tires ARM server. HP said that the development server, the HP servers Redstone Development Platform Calxeda use of energy-core ARM Cortex processors.
HP said that in the future Redstone servers use Intel Atom processors, and others. HP Server Redstone proof of concept today, but may be included in the server rack in 2800 (Backgrounder declaration).
If this setup sounds familiar it’s because Sea Micro is adopting a similar approach. SeaMicro to use the Atom chip today, but his arm is in progress. The end result is the same: Powerful energy-efficient servers. See also: UPS SeaMicro Atom-based server pre-6 with dual-core server, 5 x 11 space
HP Project Moonshot can be a way to diversify and strengthen sales of its low-power servers. Intel is a supplier, but not the only one .
HP plans to extend low-power servers, converged infrastructure and green technologies. The promise is that customers can reduce their power, and at the same time to increase data center capacity.
The components of the project Moonshot as below:
Redstone Server platform.
A laboratory that allows customers to experiment, test and reference applications on the server of Redstone. The first laboratory will be opened in Houston in January with more planned in Europe and Asia.
The program enables partners to develop technologies to move forward with technology Project Moon Shot. Initial partners include AMD, ARM Holdings, Calxeda, Canonical and Red Hat
The risk is that HP can rule on its relationship with Intel, which has supported the company as it battles with Oracle support Itanium.ARM Server could be a major threat to Intel’s core business. On the other hand, HP is moving forward. Project Moonshot, multi-year effort is a step in the right direction.
