January Jones Defends Betty Draper, Talks Motherhood

January Jones’ 6-month-old son, Xander, should be counting his blessings his mother is nothing like her ”Mad Men” character, Betty Draper Francis.

Jones recently told “Access Hollywood” she “adores” motherhood and said Xander is “doing awesome,” but she still has a soft spot for one of television’s most terrifying parents.

“I find myself defending [Betty] a lot more often, just because people are pretty hard on her lately,” she told The Daily. “All of her actions are justified. Her husband’s cheating on her, and then she finds out he’s not who he says he is. That probably warrants a divorce.”

No arguments there, but she also defends her character’s cold and outdated parenting style. “And you know, Sally shouldn’t be masturbating at other people’s houses or she’s going to get slapped,” Jones told the site, referring to a scene with her on-screen daughter, played by Kiernan Shipka.

“I don’t always agree with [Betty], she has a very volatile relationship with her children sometimes,” she told Hollywood.com, adding that Betty’s relationship with her daughter Sally is “almost competitive,” and she expects it to get worse as Sally approaches her teen years.

“[Betty's] emotional maturity level is hard to understand — she doesn’t deal with certain situations very well,” she explained.

Of course, Jones is the opposite of her “Mad Men” character — she’s not resigned to sitting at home taking care of the children and feeling unfulfilled. Jones is a working mother, who began filming the new season while eight months pregnant and later returned to the set when her son was only 6 weeks old.

The 34-year-old actress is a single mother, as Xander’s father has never been revealed. Though she told Us Weekly it was difficult to be a working mom and juggle everything, she told The Daily that keeping busy actually helped keep her sane.

“It was a challenging season for me, but I think that having work was really helpful … I just didn’t lose myself into ‘baby-world,’” she explained.
