NHL: Capitals outshone by Stars

The Dallas Stars claimed their fourth straight NHL win to stretch their lead in the Pacific Division and finish the Washington Capitals’ own winning run at house.
Michael Ryder scored twice as the Stars triumphed 5-2 to inflict a first defeat in seven house games on Washington, who were nicely in the contest at 2-2 prior to Adam Burish, Jamie Benn and Eric Nystrom struck in the third period.
Washington’s defeat allowed the Florida Panthers to close inside a point of the South-East Division leaders using a 5-1 rout with the out-of-sorts Toronto Maple Leafs.
Jack Skille, Marco Sturm, Tomas Kopecky, Sean Bergenheim and Shawn Matthias all scored as Toronto, who had been booed off by their home fans for the second game operating, were also pegged back at the North-East summit.
The Buffalo Sabres now trail them by just a point after edging out the Winnipeg Jets 6-5 thanks to Thomas Vanek’s overtime power-play objective. Vanek and Derek Roy scored twice each and every for the Sabres, a feat emulated by Winnipeg’s Bryan Little.
The Edmonton Oilers stay top with the North-West Division following a 3-1 win over North-East strugglers the Montreal Canadiens in a battle of two sides from north of the border. Ryan Jones, Tom Gilbert and Ryan Smyth scored Edmonton’s goals.
The Minnesota Wild kept pace using the Oilers soon after beating the Calgary Flames 3-0 thanks to goals from Darroll Powe and Dany Heatley along with a late empty-net clincher from Guillaume Latendresse.
Central Division leaders the Chicago Blackhawks lost 3-0 in the St Louis Blues, Vladimir Sobotka, Chris Stewart and TJ Oshie with the objectives.
Nearest rivals the Nashville Predators failed to take advantage, going down 4-3 to the Los Angeles Kings, but Johan Lidstrom scored a hat-trick as the third-placed Detroit Red Wings beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-2.
The New Jersey Devils enjoyed a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, Adam Henrique with the winner.
