Police dog ‘screaming in pain’ after runaway suspect repeatedly slammed door on animal’s head
He ran to a nearby house, chased by police dog Zinzan, and his handler.
As Zinzan tried to enter, the door was repeatedly slammed on the dog’s head and neck, leaving the animal yelping with pain.
Officers fought to force open the door and Zinzan was able to escape. He was taken to a vet for treatment but the full extent of his injuries is not yet known.
Lukasz Sklepkowski, 28, of no fixed abode, has been charged with causing unnecessary suffering under the Animal Welfare Act and was due to appear at Brent Magistrates’ Court today.
The incident follows the recent court case involving police dog handler Ian Craven, who was banned from keeping dogs for three years after he left two dogs to die in the back of his car during a heatwave.
He was spared jail, with a judge telling the 50-year-old that the mental anguish he suffered and loss of career was in itself ‘quite a punishment’.
However, one animal welfare charity said a jail sentence would have been appropriate.
The officer sparked a national outcry in June after Chay, a four-year-old Malinois, and six-month-old Alsatian puppy Tilly died from heatstroke.
They were left in the back of his scorching vehicle for more than four hours at the force’s dog training centre in Keston, Kent, while he went to a meeting in Stratford, East London.

Craven only realised his error hours later when a colleague warned a security guard at the Olympic Park in Stratford to never leave dogs unattended in cars.
Prosecutor Andrew Wiles said Craven began swearing and running up the road in a panic as he grabbed his mobile phone. Mr Wiles told City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court: ‘He was pacing up and down and was heard to say, “I’ve killed my dogs”.’
The two officers desperately tried to call colleagues at the training school before jumping in their car and racing back across London.
