Denver Broncos head coach John Fox may never give fans what they want and move Tim Tebow ahead of quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn on the depth chart, but that doesn’t mean he won’t use the former Heisman Trophy winner at all.
In the second quarter of Denver’s 24-22 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, the Broncos lost wide receiver Eddie Royal to a groin injury. Having already lost Brandon Lloyd and Demaryius Thomas before the game started, Denver was desperate at the receiver position.
Fox called for No. 15 and sent the fan favorite onto the field. Tebow never got his hands on the ball, however, as the former Florida Gator blocked for running back Lance Ball on a failed third down attempt.
In the fourth quarter, Tebow was again sent in to be a wideout. He trotted out to the field and nudged his way into the huddle. When the huddle broke, Orton dropped into a shotgun position as Tebow lined up wide right. Orton appeared to be looking to his left the entire time, eventually throwing an incomplete pass forcing Denver to punt.
So Broncos fans got what they asked for.. sort of. We’re not sure the Tebow acolytes who paid$10,000 a piece for two billboards encouraging Fox to bench Orton and start Tebow at quarterback will be satisfied. But at least the Broncos won their first game of the season and Tebow say some playing time.
